This New York City headquartered bank was formed by the merger of the Bank of Manhattan Company and Chase National Bank in 1955. Prior to this merger it had, for a time, enjoyed status as the largest bank in the world. This was after a number of acquisitions in the 1920's and, in 1930, the acquisition of the Equitable Trust Company. Several decades later (in 1996) the well-known bank was purchased by Chemical Bank of New York; it was after this acquisition that the entity took the name 'Chase Manhattan Corporation'; 4 years later it merged with J.P. Morgage & Co. and was rechristened 'JPMorgage Chase & Co'.
