Chicago: Morgage Rates & Local Info
Chicago is the largest city in Illinois and the MidWest with a population of about 3 million people.
It is the third largest city in the nation and has a history. It anchors the a metropolitan area that
claims a population of nearly 10 million people. The city was incorporated in 1833 and was built around
a portage of the Great Lakes and the Mississippi Watershed. Its location made it a natural transportation
hub and the business, financial and cultural center of the Midwest. It has historically been regarded as
one of the ten most influential cities in the world.
When Chicago was founded it was largely built around the mouth of the Chicago River. However, the Great
Chicago Fire ultimately led to our nation's largest building boom prior to that of New Orleans after
Hurricane Katrina. Many of the nations most prominent architects therefore moved to the area and helped
give Chicago its historical architectural flavor. This included the first steel-framed high-rise building
which went up in 1885. Today, the sky-line is one of the world's tallest. There are many historical
buildings downtown including the Chicago Board of Trade Building, the Sears Tower, the Aon Center and the
John Hancock Center.
The city itself boasts a wide variety of homes, townhomes, condos and apartment buildings. Large areas
are still characterized by the bungalows built early in the 20th century and shortly after World War II.
Parks line Lake Shore Drive, including Millennium Park, Lincoln Park and Grant Park. There are also
approximately 31 beaches, the Lincoln Zoo, and some bird sanctuaries.
